Rico Rally ‘Run to the Sun: Nurburgring Edition’ – September 2016 – NOW COMPLETED

It was a slightly overcast Sunday morning in mid-September as the burble of 40+ engines burst into life signalling the next saga of Rico Rally.

A short drive from the hotel to Folkstone ensued for the Eurotunnel before our first day drive through France (sampling the obligatory ham and cheese baguettes from the service stations) as we headed to the first overnight stay on the outskirts of Lyon.  A welcome meal ensured everyone was at ease ready for day two as we headed to the French hills.

With a couple of Cols taken in in the morning it was time for a break in Sisteron, a chance to let the adrenalin subside, and to take on some much needed fuel for both the cars and ourselves.

From Sisteron we headed down the Route Napoleon to our overnight stop in the south of France, our hotel directly overlooking the beach.  It seemed a world away from Kent which we’d left only 2 days ago.

Day three saw the cars burst into life early, battle the traffic of the French Riviera, heading to the famous Col de Turini.  A manic few hours of twists, turns and switchbacks only broken by a short coffee break at the top. Then it was across the coast on the Autostrada before heading for more twisty stuff in the Italian hills.  That evening it was pizzas and pasta all round as we stayed in Italy (cheesy, but true).

Day four, and again the sun was shining, ready to bathe the Swiss Alps for us as we headed to the Furka, Grimsel and Susten Passes.  Truly amazing roads and scenery, we never fail to be blown away each time we visit this region.

Day 5 started with a spirited drive through the local forests before heading towards the Nürburgring where we stayed on the final night of the event. Again the weather was kind encouraging a lot of the Rico Rally cars to head out for a few laps.  Then it was a quick freshen up before our final night dinner and awards at the famous Pistenklaus restaurant.

Bleary eyed the next day goodbyes were said to friends old and new before heading back to Calais for the Eurotunnel back to the UK.

Another Rico Rally was done, until the next time.
