Ireland – Itinerary
Our five-night route takes us from the east of Ireland through the Wicklow Mountains, south towards Cork, then west to Killarney before following the Atlantic coast north towards Galway and Connemara.
It’s a journey that mixes rewarding driving with wild coastline, mountain roads, historic places and plenty of reasons to stop along the way. Below is the planned day-by-day itinerary, including the roads, overnight stops and highlights of the trip.
Day 1: The Wicklow Mountains
After arriving in Ireland, we head into the Wicklow Mountains for our first taste of the roads and landscapes that make this trip so distinctive.
The route takes in Sally Gap and the Old Military Road, with sweeping views, open moorland and plenty of opportunities to stop and take it all in.
We finish the day at our first hotel, where we’ll get together for a welcome dinner and a relaxed first evening in Ireland.
Day 2: Mountains, Coast and Cork
Today brings a real mix of scenery and driving as we continue south through the Blackstairs Mountains and Nore Valley.
From there, the route heads towards the coast, taking in the Copper Coast Road, Mahon Falls and the Knockmealdown Mountains before reaching Cork.
It’s a day of constant variety, moving from quiet inland roads to dramatic coastal stretches as the scenery changes around us.
Day 3: Beara Peninsula and Killarney
This is one of the standout days of the trip.
We head onto the Beara Peninsula, where quiet roads, rugged scenery and remote landscapes make for some of the most memorable driving of the week.
The route includes Healy Pass and Caha Pass before we continue towards Killarney, where we stay for the next two nights.
With no need to move hotels the following morning, there’s also time to enjoy Killarney and make the most of the evening.
Day 4: Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula
Today is all about southwest Ireland at its best.
The route includes Ladies View, Moll’s Gap, the Ring of Kerry, Skellig Ring and Kerry Cliffs, before continuing towards the Dingle Peninsula and Conor Pass.
This is a day to take your time over – great roads, coastal viewpoints and plenty of places worth stopping for along the way – before returning to Killarney for our second night.
Day 5: The Wild Atlantic Way
Leaving Killarney, we join the Wild Atlantic Way for another memorable day on the road.
Highlights include Loop Head, Kilkee Cliffs, Spanish Point, the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, bringing together rugged coastline, quieter roads and some of the most distinctive scenery of the trip.
We finish in Galway, where we’ll meet for our final-night dinner and one last evening together.
Day 6: Connemara and Homeward Bound
Our final driving day begins with the Sky Road, before heading deeper into Connemara through a landscape of mountains, lakes and open countryside.
There’s still time to enjoy the roads, stop for the views and take in one one final stretch of western Ireland before we turn east and begin the journey home.
From there, we make our way back across Ireland for the ferry and the return to the UK.
